THE HOBBIT AUDITIONS

Waco Civic Tours is producing The Hobbit! An abridged play that tells the story of Bilbo Baggins and his adventure with Thorin and Gandalf to take back Thorin’s treasure from Smaug!

THORIN:
Long ago, in my grandfather’s day, we dwarves mined and tunneled and grew rich and prosperous on the gold and jewels we discovered. That was what brought us to Smaug the dragon’s attention. Dragons steal gold and jewels, you know. And then they guard their plunder as long as they live—which is practically forever, unless they’re killed. Well, to make a long story short, old Smaug flew in and settled on our mountain in a spout of flames. And before long, he’d wiped out nearly all of us dwarves and stolen every last ounce of our gold and jewels. Now it’s time we got it back.

GOLLUM:
Curse it! Curse it! Curse it! Curse the Baggins! It’s gone! It must have had my birthday present in its pocketses. My birthday present! Curse it! How did we lose it, my precioussss? It must have slipped from us after all these ages and ages. And the Baggins must have found it. Curse it.... But maybe it doesn’t know what our birthday present can do. That if it puts it on its finger no one will be able to see it. It'll be completely invisible. We must catch up with the Baggins before it puts it on and becomes invisible and gets away. Hurry. Hurry.

GANDALF:
Good gracious heavens, no, no, no, no! Don’t be a fool, Mr. Baggins. And in the name of all wonder don’t mention the word furrier again as long as you’re within 100 miles of Beorn’s house. He’s a skin-changer. He changes his skin. And sometimes he’s a huge black bear. Sometimes he’s a great strong black-haired man. He lives in this oak wood we’ve reached and that’s him you can hear chopping. That's all you need to know. I’ll go and prepare him for your introduction.

BILBO:
Now you’re in for it, Bilbo Baggins. You went and put your foot right in it that day when Gandalf came visiting. Dear me, what a fool I was—and am. If only I could wake up and find this beastly place was my own front door at home. But what’s this? It must be the secret entrance to Smaug’s lair. Well, here goes. No use delaying any longer. Let’s try the key. It’s too late to turn back now. I’ve done it. This will show them. “More like a grocer than a burglar,” indeed! We’ll hear no more about that. I’ll sneak just inside and take a tiny look.
