What To Know About This Production

The Laramie Project is a powerful documentary‑style play that examines how the town of Laramie, Wyoming responded to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard.

Drawn from real interviews and testimonies, it captures a community wrestling with grief, prejudice, compassion, and the possibility of change.
With more than twenty voices interwoven, the play offers an extraordinary ensemble experience where actors inhabit multiple roles, explore diverse identities, and bring authenticity to stories that challenge assumptions and celebrate resilience.

YoubeYou – Ngamotu Theatre for Youth is the Taranaki arm of YoubeYou – Aotearoa, a charity dedicated to advocacy, empowerment, and building a world where our differences are celebrated and every person is valued for who they truly are. You be you isn’t just our name — it’s our mission.

Our inaugural production is The Laramie Project: a bold, ensemble‑driven work that invites young performers to engage with one of contemporary theatre’s most influential stories of community, courage, and social change.
Taking the stage at Little Theatre this September, this Senior Section production is open to actors aged 15–21 and offers a creative home where truth, empathy, and collaboration lead the way.

Co-directed by Lisa Stuck (Deputy Principal, Woodleigh School) and Hamish Kerr (School Counsellor, Francis Douglas Memorial College), the production is guided by two exceptional educators known for empowering rangatahi to grow, take risks, and thrive in the performing arts. Their combined strengths in teaching, wellbeing, and youth development shape a rehearsal environment that is supportive, inspiring, and deeply respectful.

YoubeYou proudly champions diverse, inclusive, and equitable spaces for all. Parents and caregivers are warmly invited to be part of the journey too — whether through technical support, backstage roles, or mentoring young people as they develop their craft.

Join us and discover how you can be part of this transformative, community‑centred project.

Auditions For The Laramie Project

What To Expect At Auditions

⭐ THE AUDITIONS — What to Expect

OPEN TO ACTORS 15-21 years.

Traditional auditions usually mean picking a role, standing in front of a table, and hoping you’ve chosen “the right” character.
That’s not us.

YoubeYou – Ngamotu and The Laramie Project work differently — and so do you, that's why you're here right!
You’re here because you want to act, to learn, to grow on stage and off, and to stretch yourself as a performer now and into the future.

We want to see you act — truthfully, boldly, creatively.

We want to see how you transform, how you connect, how you tell a story.
From that, we’ll know exactly where you’ll shine in The Laramie Project — and you’ll know it too.

So goodbye to the traditional audition, and hello to…

🎭 The Ensemble Workshop (45 minutes)

This is where we warm up, loosen up, and explore what your body and voice can do. It’s playful, collaborative, and designed to help you discover characters from the inside out.

Physical Transformation —

Explore how posture, movement, rhythm, and physicality can completely reshape a character.

Direct Address —

Learn how to speak directly to an audience with honesty, clarity, and emotional connection — a key skill in The Laramie Project.

🎤 The Monologues (1.5 hours)

The Laramie Project is built on real voices and real stories. Many characters deliver powerful monologues straight to the audience — moments that can be warm, nostalgic, heartbreaking, or quietly revolutionary.

This part of the audition lets us see how you handle emotional truth, storytelling, and connection.

You don’t need to memorise anything.
But it is helpful if you’ve read the selected monologues so you understand their tone and meaning.

Our directors will guide you, offer ideas, and help you stretch into new territory — sometimes surprising even yourself.

❤️ The Three Monologue Selections

We’ve chosen three pieces from The Laramie Project that explore warmth, nostalgia, affection, loss and activism.

These themes sit at the heart of the show — and they give you space to show us your emotional range, your imagination, and your ability to bring real people’s stories to life.

So go on — audition. Be brave, stretch yourself, and help us tell a story that should never have needed to be told. A story born from discrimination and violence, yes — but ultimately one of hope, love, community, and human connection. We want you with us, because you being you is at the very heart of this story.
