- Tom (her son) our narrator, a stifled poet forced to decide between duty to his family and following his dreams
- Laura (her daughter) a quiet daydreamer isolated from the world due to insecurities stemming from a childhood illness that left her disabled
- Jim (the gentleman caller) A nice, ordinary, young man
