What To Know About This Production
Sister Act the Musical is a high-energy, Tony-nominated stage comedy based on the hit 1992 film. The story follows Deloris Van Cartier, an aspiring 1970s disco diva in Philadelphia who accidentally witnesses her gangster boyfriend commit a murder. For her safety, the police place her in protective custody inside a struggling convent—the absolute last place anyone would look for a nightclub singer. Disguised as a nun, the brash, free-spirited Deloris clashes immediately with the rigid, uptight Mother Superior. However, when she takes over the convent's terrible choir, she uses her soul and disco background to transform the sisters into a dazzling musical sensation. While the newfound fame helps save the church, it also accidentally alerts the mob to her location, leading to a comedic and heartwarming showdown. Featuring a brand-new, original score by Disney legend Alan Menken, the show trades the film's 1960s pop covers for a soundtrack heavily inspired by Motown, funk, and disco, creating a vibrant celebration of sisterhood, friendship, and finding your voice.

Auditions For Sister Act
What To Expect At Auditions
Sister Act, The Musical!!
We are celebrating a 90yr legacy with such an overall joyous and high energy piece. After directing the 75th and the 80th anniversary productions, it felt right to come home for the 90th!! I want this piece to be so much fun, but also educational for those with less experience. I want to build the cast as a team throughout the process. Community theatre has been some of the best productions and experiences in my life, I want to share that love with you all. I grew up with Sister Act, and it was always one of my favorites. This piece is intended for adults 18+, due to adult humor, innuendo, violence, and adult themes/situations. That being said the overall theme is JOY and DISCOVERY of one’s true self. It is a female empowerment piece at its core and such a celebration of all the forms a hero comes in.
Sister Act Musical is NOT a “church musical”, despite its setting. At the core of the piece it is truly a Gospel/Disco Comedy with Jazz, Funk and R&B flares. You don’t have to know this type of music to be considered at all!! We are looking for actors that can sing, groove to the beat but most importantly ACT through it all. The story and the characters are the most important!! I would rather see personality, character, high energy and a willingness to play than perfection. Deloris is a real life Tina Turner/Whitney Houston/Beyonce and not a traditional musical theater lead female. The other characters are also REAL too, even if exaggerated for story and character, their portrayal has to be REAL. The production/story works because the characters believe their reality FULLY, it’s also what makes it so funny!! These are REAL nuns that also learn how to get down!! Ensemble is used throughout and also must embody these things as well, as far as high energy, character based performance.
No Divas allowed in real life, just onstage. Also, your singing audition and dance audition are part of your initial first round acting audition, so tell a story and make big choices.
We welcome and NEED actors of all ethnicities, genders, ages, experience levels and body types to audition. The convent and the show world NEED to look like the real world. Character genders may be specified by the story; however, all performers are encouraged to audition. Casting decisions will be based on the best fit for each role and the overall vision of the production. We will cast the best actor for each role, period.
**However the role of Deloris is intended for a person of color. I feel this role is mandatory for a person of color due to the storyline. Pablo is another role that calls for a Latino actor. And other roles are intended for minorities, BUT besides Deloris I feel confident I can still tell a respectful story of human celebration with anyone who is RIGHT for the vision!!
Final Thoughts…
If you leave the room and you’re smiling or humming the song you sang, you did your job. The goal is to make yourself proud, because not all people will make it. Looking to cast a full cast of 35-40 adults. We want to have fun making this show — bring your joy, your weird, your you, and love of theatre!!
I can’t wait to see each and every one of you at the auditions!!
Please familiarize yourself with the songs from the show here: Sister Act on Spotify
Please remember, all experience levels are encouraged to audition. “You are Fabulous Baby!!!”
