What To Know About This Production
Moonlight and Magnolias is a comedy set in 1939 in the executive office of legendary producer David O. Selznick. Selznick has just shut down the production of a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchel’s Gone with the Wind. The screenplay just doesn’t work and needs to be re-written. Selznick, weeks behind schedule, hires screenwriter Ben Hecht, problem: Hecht hasn’t read the book and for what it’s worth firmly believes that any civil war film made will end as a flop, they all have in the past. Selznick needs an experienced director, so he hires Victor Fleming. The issue is that Fleming is already working on directing Wizard of Oz, but Selznick decides to take him away from that project anyway. Selznick, Hecht, and Fleming are tasked with rewriting the Gone with the Wind script. Louis B. Mayer, who is both Selznick's father-in-law and the owner of the studio, has requested that the screenplay be finalized within five days. To make sure the deadline is met, Selznick, Hecht, and Fleming will stay locked in the office until their work is finished, receiving only peanuts and bananas for food provided by Miss Poppenghul, Mr. Selznick’s private secretary.
