What To Know About This Production
Cheaper by the Dozen is a fast-paced, funny, and heartfelt story based on the real-life Gilbreth family. At the center is Frank Gilbreth, an eccentric and brilliant pioneer of industrial efficiency, who runs his household of twelve children with the same logic and order he brings to the workplace. Determined to save time and maximize productivity, Frank applies his unorthodox methods to everything from household chores to morning routines—often to the embarrassment of his children. His systems are bizarre, clever, and surprisingly effective, but not always easy to live with. As the family tries to keep up, the play explores the balance between structure and spontaneity, discipline and love—all with humor and heart.

Characters
- Dad Frank Gilbreth Sr Male, 45 - 60: Tall. Carries himself with the self-assurance of a successful man who is proud of his wife, proud of his family and proud of his business accomplishments.
- Mother Lillian Sr Female, age 40 – 50: A gracious, attractive woman. She is also a psychologist. In her own way, she is often able to get even better results with her large family than Dad, but she is not a disciplinarian. She never threatens, shouts or becomes excited. She dresses neatly.
- Anne Gilbreth Female, age 16 –20: Attractive and sweet-natured, yet quietly stubborn. She’s intelligent and quick-witted, though naturally shy. Torn between her longing for a boyfriend and her growing desire for independence, she struggles to assert herself under her father’s overbearing expectations. *This character will have to hold hands with Larry and be kissed on the cheek
- Young Ernestine Gilbreth Female, age 14 –18: She’s thoughtful and sentimental, with a soft spot for family memories. At the same time, she’s confident, expressive, and has a natural connection with the audience.
- Old Ernestine Gilbreth Female, age 35 - 45: One of the play’s narrators and helps guide the audience through the story. Ernestine Gilbreth co-wrote the book the play is based on.
- Martha Gilbreth Female, age 12 –17: Curious, bubbly, and full of energy. She looks up to Ernestine and often follows her lead, soaking up the excitement around her. She’s a bit dreamy and naive, but not bratty—just confident and eager to be part of everything going on.
- Young Frank Gilbreth Jr Male, age 11 –15: Offering a down-to-earth take on life in a big, busy family. He’s thoughtful, optimistic, and handles the ups and downs of growing up with a good sense of humor. Smart, steady, and easy to relate to.
- Old Frank Gilbreth Jr. Male, age 32 - 42: One of the play’s narrators and helps guide the audience through the story. Frank Gilbreth Jr. co-wrote the book the play is based on.
- Bill Gilbreth Male, age 9 –13: Your classic rascal-next-door—cheerful, easygoing, and content doing his own thing. He’s not super curious about everything going on around him unless it directly interests him. Think Tom Sawyer: independent, a little mischievous, and always marching to the beat of his own drum.
- Lillian Gilbreth Female, age 8 –12: Stuck in that classic middle-child spot—too young to be fully included with the older sisters, but not quite one of the little kids either. She’s torn between tagging along with the older girls and trying to lead the younger ones. She’s figuring out where she fits in the big, busy family and just wants to feel seen.
- Fred Gilbreth Male, age 7 –10: Serious, literal, and a bit quirky—he sees the world in a very matter-of-fact way. He's the most like their father: logical, precise, and focused on how things work. While not always tuned into emotions, he’s smart, observant, and full of unintentional charm.
- Daniel/Danielle Gilbreth Any gender, age 6 –10: Daniel (or Danielle) has a strong sense of right and wrong and isn’t afraid to speak up when something feels unfair. Whether defending a sibling or standing their ground, they bring a lot of heart—and a surprising amount of passion—to even the smallest battles.
- Jackie Gilbreth Any gender, age 6 –9: Full of wide-eyed wonder and big feelings. Innocent, excitable, and always eager to be part of the action—whether they understand it or not. They bring energy, curiosity, and a touch of chaos to the family mix.
- Robert Gilbreth
- Mrs. Fitzgerald Adult female: The family’s devoted housekeeper, she is a kindly woman who serves as a second mother figure in the household. She is deeply committed to the family’s well-being, though her patience is often tested by the chaos of such a large household—especially when it comes to Father. *Interested in this character having any kind of accent
- Dr. Burton Adult male: The family doctor is a plain, outspoken man. *This is a very small role. This character is only in one scene. Good for someone who doesn’t have as much time to attend rehearsals or just wants to dip their toes into theatre.
- Joe Scales Male between 15 and 20: A popular boy and head cheerleader in school. Cocky and arrogant he is…a bit much.
- Miss Brill Female between 30 and 60: A thin and sallow woman with angular features and wears the type of glasses that pinch together on the bridge of her nose. She wears a tailored suit. She has no love for the children and they have none for her.
- Larry Male between 15 and 20: A nice-looking, clean-cut young man. The classic “boy next door” type—sensitive, sweet, and genuinely caring. His sincerity and warmth make him instantly likable. *Will have to hold Anne’s hand and kiss her on the cheek
